Hooray for Rivet! (It Rhymes!)

 

The beloved Los Tiburones de San Jose re-signed trade deadline acquisition defenseman Craig Rivet (riv-AY) today, days before he hit the free agent market. I was kind of “meh” at the time of the acquistion, but Rivet really turned my head in the playoffs where he was really stellar and provided some good stability, scoring and leadership for the young defense corps. Kudos to Sharks GM Doug Wilson for getting this one done. With no guarantee of re-signing unrestricted free agent defenseman Scott Hannan, Wilson mitigated a lot of risk by re-signing Rivet before the deadline, even if he probably overpaid a little. Rivet would have easily commanded more on the open market, so this deal’s a steal.
